For me self actualization means experiencing the totality of our being human--it means reaching your highest human potential and doing this for self, society, and the world. I am still a long way to my self actualization but i feel i owe the world the best that i can be so that in my limited time in this wonderful planet, i would have lived life to the fullest. Life for me is a progression of choices where choosing the positive choices where one is able to grow makes one nearer to becoming self actualized. There is a faint inner voice that goes clearer once our connection with our higher self becomes shiny and all inteference and static reduced to a minimum. This inner voice my sometimes be mistaken for our own little minds til we recognize that it has its own independent opinion and unreasonable logic different from us. To be able to distinguish this requires an honest heart and a clear mind. Sometimes society tells us to do many things that actually needs to be reviewed and critically analyzed because it drowns out the voice of our inner true selves with social sanctions, the need to belong, social rules and cultural constraints. Yet if we pursue what in our hearts is right, then no matter what society says we will continue to grow to be our own true selves.

True story! There's a Mind voice, Little voice, and Community voice all running around in the brain together -- chatting up a storm on some days.

Community is the loud one who is the party-animal telling me to follow the crowd for fun and to go buy those new jeans for happiness.

The Mind voice often talks me out of what Community is saying. Following the crowd can have bad results, and really... How happy am I going to be without enough money for the electric bill?

The Quiet voice is often lost behind the debate between Community and Mind; sitting there quietly waiting for me to notice it. If I remember to go ask Quiet their opinion about following the crowd and getting new jeans... I may get a different answer.

Perhaps the crowd needs a designated driver, and perhaps the jeans should be bought for the young teen with parents who just lost their home.

It never hurts to get three opinions on what to do with thoughts. The trick is in remembering that the third opinion is available only if you ask for it.

Then, after you have all of your choices in front of you, it's possible to pick and choose through them for the best options for your situation.

But, never try to explain this voice thing using the word "voice" to anybody or it gets you in trouble. The only voice you are allowed to hear in your head that is not your own - is that of God.

So, is God the third voice? And that question gets answered by everybody individually. For some yes, and for others no. It all depends upon your religious training. The important thing is only that the voice is there.

Happy thoughts to all! Catherine
