America's national parks embody the American spirit. They are vital
to the survival of many animal species, and offer countless educational
experiences for children of all ages.

But a pending amendment proposed by Senator Coburn (R-OK) would allow people to carry loaded
weapons in national parks.
Take Action. >>

Right now, the National Parks Service has reasonable guidelines
about firearms in national parks. It's currently lawful to transport
firearms through national parks as long as they are stored and unloaded.

But the Coburn amendment would strip away enforcement and:

  • Make poaching of park wildlife easier. Rangers would lack the authority to question individuals about their loaded weapons.

  • Change the relationship between rangers and visitors. The amendment would cause rangers to be more suspicious and wary when meeting visitors, especially in the backcountry.

  • Create new safety hazards. The amendment could allow loaded, ready to fire weapons on the same spots families use for recreation.

  • Urge Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne and the Senate to say NO to the Coburn Loaded Guns amendment

Some senators mistakenly think all firearms are prohibited in parks. This is NOT the case. Please let them know there are meaningful and reasonable rules already in place.
